The steep slopes surrounding an intermittent stream in a residential area were beginning to subside and cause property damage. Foundations were starting to shift and future large-scale damage was feared.
Terra Technologies was contracted to design a stable channel that included placing a subsurface drainage pipe, compacting soils, and reducing the slope. Our biotechnical engineering design included gabions, a fluvial pool, grade control weirs, erosion control blankets, turf-reinforced mats, and a diverse native plant seed blend.
Additionally, our duties included the acquisition of the necessary Clean Water Act permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as well as the inspection of the construction phase of the project.
Compensatory mitigation was required because of the impacts to waters of the U.S. caused by the channel improvements. An appropriate offsite mitigation site was found and Terra Technologies designed that project using biotechnical engineering methods, oversaw its construction, and will monitor the status of the restoration.
