Underground Storage Tank Removals

Pine Lawn, Missouri

Client:
City of Pine Lawn

Terra Technologies was retained by the City of Pine Lawn to remove two 3,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (UST's) from the City’s Garage facility.  The purpose of the work to be performed was to properly remove the UST's in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) UST Closure Guidance Document.  A new UST to be used by the City of Pine Lawn was planned for installation in the former UST pit excavation.

Based on the relative small size of the tanks, the UST's were removed using a mini-excavator.  An eductor was installed on one of the openings of the tanks and an air compressor was used to vent the tanks.  The UST's were monitored for oxygen (O2) and lower explosive limit (LEL).  Once safe levels were maintained, the UST's were accessed and cleaned for scrapping.  Post excavation confirmatory soil sampling indicated that a minor amount of petroleum impacted soil above the MDNR soil cleanup guidelines was present in one area of the excavation.  Therefore, a total of 8.42 tons of petroleum-impacted material were removed from the area of concern.  Sampling conducted following the impacted soil removal activities revealed that the soil remaining in the excavation was below the soil cleanup guidelines.

A No Further Action Letter was received for the Site and a new UST was installed in the excavation that met the new UST requirements required by the Federal government.
