Terra Technologies designed and oversaw construction of a stream bank stabilization project for the Boone County Public Works Department. Minor Hill Road, a rural county road north of Ashland, was being undermined by erosion for approximately 110 feet along a steep bank above a small ephemeral stream.
Terra Technologies created the construction plans for a gravity retailing wall consisting of a gabion basket foundation with a cellular confinement backslope. This wall will stabilize the slope and provide a surface for the reconstructed road while allowing for native plant vegetation to reestablish from seed within the face of the cellular confinement.
Initially, trees, boulders and debris were removed along this approximately 30 foot tall slope to provide the base for the gabion baskets. The wire baskets were placed along the bed of the small ephemeral stream and filled with rock to provide the foundation for the upper surfaces. Once the gabion baskets were in place, cellular confinement was installed on top of the baskets. Rock was placed in the back cells and soil was placed in the front cells and seeded with native grasses and wildflowers adapted to dry conditions. Once established, these plants will provide erosion control while beautifying a dry, challenging slope.
Construction of the Minor Hill Road Stream Bank Stabilization Project is expected to be completed in 2008.
