Major expansion of administrative and worship facilities in the spring of 2003 required expansion of infrastructure to accommodate on-site transportation and parking. In order to buffer these impacts from an existing residential community and to recreate a large expanse of improved water infiltration, approximately 20 acres of numerous mid-height prairies were established in conjunction with tree and shrub plantings.
In order to reduce weedy succession, a granular humate-based fungal inoculant was formulated by Terra Technologies to include endo- and ectomycorrhizal species. Approximately 40 species of local ecotype prairie grasses and wildflowers were supplied by a Missouri Department of Conservation Grow Native! producer who collected seeds from counties contiguous with Johnson County, Kansas. For protection from erosion, a slurry of bonded fiber matrix hydraulic mulch and water was sprayed onto the seeded site.
Photographs taken in May 2005 indicate project success. The church intends to mow the property annually as their only form of planned maintenance.
