Terra Technologies, in conjunction with Swallow Tail LLC, announces a Public Notice issued by the Kansas City District of the US Army Corps of Engineers for the proposed operation of the Smith Creek Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank in Moniteau County Missouri.
The 175-acre restoration project was constructed by Swallow Tail in 2008 and 2009 to provide high quality wetland and stream mitigation credits for sale within the Lower Moreau Missouri River Ecological Drainage Unit. More than 250,000 containerized plantings of prairie grasses, wildflowers, wetland plants, trees and shrubs were planted on the parcel in 2009. Scientists with Terra Technologies are monitoring ecological enhancements at the site.
The project will create and enhance almost 100 acres of riparian corridor and 33 acres of wetlands. Additionally, it involves the restoration of floodplain ephemeral stream channels on the parcel that were historically altered into agricultural drainage patterns that allowed row crop farming at the site.
Smith Creek, a tributary to the Moreau River, traverses the property separating an Ozark forested ridge from the adjacent flood plain. Aquatic life in Smith Creek will benefit from adjacent wetland and stream restoration improvements.
