Scientists with Terra Technologies recently completed the annual monitoring for a Permittee Provided Mitigation Site at the Pittsburg Land Development Mitigation Area in Pittsburg, Kansas. The mitigation site is comprised of 2.60 acres of wetland creation, 1.40 acres of emergent wetland creation, 0.60 acres of open water creation, and 1.6 acres of wetland buffer creation. Along with the aforementioned mitigation, the permit for this site also requires annual monitoring to determine the success of the mitigation site.
The annual monitoring included the designation of permanent sampling locations which are then visited to collect the data defined in the Performance Standards section of the Mitigation Plan. Data collected at the Pittsburg Land Development Mitigation area included the percent cover of native vegetation, the percent cover of hydrophytic vegetation, the presence of hydric soils, the presence of wetland hydrology, the percent survival of planted trees and shrubs, the condition let down structures, the limits do habitat areas, the presence of mitigation signage, and the percent cover of invasive species.
Once the on-site data had been collected Scientists with Terra Technologies then analyzed the data and extrapolated a report describing the results of the data and a determination of the success of the Permittee Provided Mitigation Site, as well as, the issuing of recommendations to ensure mitigation success in future years.
