David Flick, Principal and Founder of Terra Technologies, is proud to announce that the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has initiated a Public Notice regarding the proposed establishment of the Onion Creek Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank which will be operated by Swallow Tail, LLC. This is the first formal step in the review process for this 117-acre restoration site.
Located in Montgomery County, Kansas, only one half of a mile from Oklahoma, the design for this proposed mitigation bank includes a variety of restoration activities that will improve water quality and wildlife habitat. These include planting approximately 68 acres of new, expanded riparian buffer, enhancing about 14 acres of existing riparian buffer, establishing 15 acres of herbaceous wetlands, and restoring 5 acres of herbaceous wetlands and almost 15 acres of wetland buffers. In addition, there are several planned in-stream mitigation activities such as increasing the bank stability of Onion Creek, and restoring natural channel dimensions and sinuous paths of currently channelized and degraded stretches of an unnamed perennial stream, and four unnamed ephemeral streams.
The habitat improvements to this site will be used to compensate for future impacts to wetlands and streams throughout the Verdigris River basin in southeastern Kansas.
