Scientists with Terra Technologies recently completed the annual monitoring for the Permittee Provided Mitigation Site at the Laurens Bay Residential Development in Topeka, Kansas. The mitigation for the residential development comprised of three on-site areas and included 1,207 linear feet of stream channel restoration, 6.11 acres of riparian corridor restoration, and the creation of 0.05 acre of wetlands. As part of the permit, the mitigation site requires annual monitoring to determine the success of the mitigation site.
The annual monitoring included the designation of permanent sampling locations which are then visited to collect the data defined in the Performance Standards section of the Mitigation Plan. Data collected at the Laurens Bay Residential Development Mitigation site included the percent cover of native vegetation, the percent survival of planted trees and shrubs, the condition of restored stream channels and their grade control structures, the presence of wetland conditions, the presence of mitigation signage, and the percent cover of invasive species.
After field data had been collected Scientists with Terra Technologies then analyzed the data and extrapolated a report describing the results of the data and a determination of the success of the Permittee Provided Mitigation Site, as well as, the issuing of recommendations to ensure mitigation success in future years.
