David Flick, Principal and Founder of Terra Technologies announces that the 39th and Coachman Prairie Ecobasin managed by the Water Pollution Control Department at the City of Independence has attained a significant ecological milestone. Scientists with the firm have confirmed the presence of over 150 climax plant community species of native grasses, wildflowers, wetland plants, trees and shrubs at the 5-acre regional basin. Restoration activities at the basin were initiated in 2005, with semi-monthly maintenance tasks including spraying of colonizing weed species, selective mowing and trimming, and the biennial addition of additional wildflower species. The basin functions to attenuate water volume, improve water quality, and provide important habitat to aquatic and terrestrial species.
The Prairie Ecobasin at 39th and Coachman is one of 20 regional ecobasins and natural stream channels managed under the direction of Dick Champion and the professional staff at WPCD with the assistance of Terra Technologies.
