David Flick, Principal and Founder, announces that the firm successfully completed Section 404/401 Clean Water Act permitting for construction of the South Foster Surface Coal Mine near Foster, Missouri. Continental Coal, a regional award-winning mining company, provides bituminous coal to the KCP&L power plant in LaCygne, Kansas.
Scientists with Terra Technologies assisted the mining engineering team with organization of key technical submittals in support of the project. Activities will require mining through two segments of upland tributaries and 1.5 acres of low grade wetlands, each manipulated by past agricultural activities.
Mining through jurisdictional tributaries requires an extensive quantity of compensatory mitigation due to the loss of stream habitat. Scientists with Terra Technologies designed in-stream and riparian corridor improvements to 4,175 linear feet of Gillum Creek within the project parcel, creating over 10,000 stream credits of ecological gain. An additional 1,124 stream credits and 1.5 wetland credits were purchased by the applicant from the Camp Branch Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank, a mitigation bank in Cass County serving the South Grand River watershed of the Central Plains/Osage/South Grand Ecological Drainage Unit in Missouri.
