David Flick, Principal and Founder of Terra Technologies, announces the firm completed design, permitting, and construction oversight of a substantial permittee-provided mitigation project in Overland Park, Kansas.
Constructed by Swallow Tail LLC, the project serves to restore approximately 15 acres of historic wetlands, prairies and riparian habitat within the geomorphic floodplain of Blue River.
Floodplain wetlands and extensive riparian corridors once existed adjacent to high order perennial streams. Restoration opportunities for such streams are rare, many of which are permanently farmed or have been levied to allow commercial development. At the mitigation site, a flood bench was excavated along an outside bend of the river, and a wide area of riparian corridor was restored with native species of grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. Along a local ephemeral stream, hydrology from an adjacent residential development is used to restore previously filled flood plain wetlands. The mitigation project is adjacent to the proposed Negro Creek Stream and Wetland Mitigation Bank currently under review for consideration by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
